Preschool Separation Anxiety in India 2026: Handling the First Two Weeks

Most children cry at the door in the first days. That is not a sign the preschool is wrong. It is a sign the child has someone they do not want to leave, and a room they do not know yet.
What helps in the first two weeks
- Keep the goodbye short and the same every day. A long negotiation makes the leaving the biggest part of the morning.
- Arrive at the same time, and collect at the time you promised. Predictable pick-up is what the child is waiting for.
- Tell the teacher one thing the child loves, so the first conversation in the room is familiar.
- Stay for the settling window the centre offers, then leave while the teacher is already with your child.
By the second week most children have a person and a corner. If the distress is still as sharp at the end of that fortnight, talk to the centre head. The answer is usually a slower start, not a different school.
