Understanding Growth Beyond Milestones
When children begin preschool, it’s natural for parents to look for clear, visible signs of progress like-
Are they learning new words?
Can they recognise shapes or numbers?
Are they joining in activities?
These things matter, of course. But somewhere along the way, the first year of preschool quietly teaches something deeper, that -growth doesn’t always show up in obvious ways. Sometimes, growth is very subtle.
At the beginning, your child may not want to sit during circle time at all—standing at the back, holding a teacher’s hand, or simply watching from a distance. A few weeks later, they sit for a minute… then two… and one day, they stay for the whole song. It may seem small, but it shows they’re beginning to feel safe, comfortable, and included.
At other times, growth shows up in how they handle challenges. Your child may struggle with a simple puzzle or activity and give up quickly at first. But over time, instead of pushing it away, they pause… and try once more. Even if they still need help, that small decision to try again is growth.
These moments are easy to miss if you’re only watching for big milestones. But they matter more than we realise. Because this is where it all begins-confidence, independence, curiosity. Not in big leaps, but in these small, steady steps.
Over time, something shifts for parents too. You may find yourself asking less, “What did they learn today?” and more, “How are they doing… really? “You start noticing little things at home-the way they try to do something on their own, the way they express what they need, the way they approach small frustrations. And slowly, your idea of growth begins to change. It’s no longer about how fast they’re learning or how they compare to others.
It’s about showing up, trying, feeling comfortable, and growing at their own pace.
The first year of preschool has a gentle way of reshaping what “progress” looks like. And once you begin to see it this way, the small things don’t feel small anymore—the effort, the attempts, the quiet confidence that builds day by day. Because in the end, those are the changes that stay.
