Preschool FAQ

Little Elly use KUSMA (Karnataka unaided school’s management association). The preschool will be closed when all the schools are closed too for some untoward incident. Make-up days will not be scheduled for days missed. No refunds are given for closings, holidays or illness.

Preschools in Karnataka are not regulated and do not yet come under any governing body. But we encourage our schools to register themselves with the Block Education Office so that any issues at a later date can be addressed through them.

Parents may schedule a meeting through phone or via email with the school. We have an open door policy so parents may drop in at any time, but please stop by the office so that we can make sure the visit is not disruptive to the child or the classroom. Sometimes a peek through the window might be a better option.

The Coordinator and the Teachers are always available to speak with parents about any concern, and a parent may request a meeting with their child’s teachers at any Saturday. Dropping off or picking up can be a busy time for staff. We encourage you to make an appointment so that undivided attention may be given to you. Teachers will communicate regularly with parents about the events and activities through the Newsletter. Additionally, teachers will share pictures of the child enjoying activities on Facebook as well. Each quarter, teachers evaluate their students’ progress through assessments which accompany parent-teacher conferences.

Being involved in your child’s educational experience is very important. Although we do not have parent volunteers that work in the classroom, we provide many opportunities for parents to be engaged with their child’s learning. Families are invited to attend a number of events throughout the year, such as Grandparent’s Day, Mommies Day Out, Daddies Field Day, the Annual Day performance, and more! We gladly welcome parents to join us for special celebrations, birthdays and workshops. A teacher may also ask for parent volunteers to help with a particular activity. If you would like to participate you may always ask the Centre head for opportunities.

Teachers and Staff

Our overall school-wide child to staff ratio is less than 10:1, with individual classroom ratios varying throughout the day. Our average classroom ratios vary for each program:
  • Playgroup: 15:2;
  • Nursery: 18:2;
  • Kindergarten: 20:2.
All classrooms have a qualified early childhood educator leading the class and an experienced sub staff. In addition to these two adults, we have floaters that “float” from classroom to classroom when there is a need for additional help. Classrooms may also have student teachers from our LETTER Academy working with individual students. Little Elly Preschool is licensed by the BEO and meets all of their requirements.

Our Centre head and Teachers hold a Bachelor of Education degree and/or a diploma in Early Childhood Education and have previous teaching experience. Above all, we seek teachers with experience and passion to be in this field. All the staff have a valid Childcare First Aid certification and undergo a comprehensive Background Check.
Little Elly Preschool also provides continuing in-service training and enables teams of teachers to attend conferences and workshops to bring back the latest in concepts, methods, and materials.
Our Annual teacher trainings/meetings with the educational director serve as one of the most important training and resource gathering periods for our teachers. Our teachers have the energy, intellect, and charisma that take children on a magical and challenging voyage of discovery. Our teachers are well-educated and nurturing people who respect the children’s need for security while encouraging autonomy.

Our turnover is very low. We have many teachers who have been with us from day 1. But we also are pleased to have a good mix of both mature and younger staff.
We believe a school is only as good as its teachers, and we are fortunate to attract many exceptional applicants each year who are eager to become a part of Little Elly.

The Little Elly approach emphasizes curiosity, creativity and hands-on learning. We embrace a philosophy of education that combines a nurturing, inclusive learning environment with an increasingly challenging academic program that addresses the developmental needs of each child.
Our curriculum is time-tested, unique to Little Elly, and crafted by our own Curriculum Director. This customized curriculum is theme-based, and draws from multiple early childhood models, particularly Waldorf and Montessori. We believe this blend offers children the well-rounded experiences and skill set needed for their future academic success.
Well-organized classrooms within our programs are divided into concept areas, and children have a multitude of materials available to them for various types of play. Each day is intended to be joyful and full of discovery. Teachers lead children through a variety of experiences and learning opportunities that balances academics and meaningful play.

Our philosophy is developmentally oriented following a strong academic curriculum. Our program provides opportunities for being with other children in a setting conducive to the individual child’s development. We provide meaningful play to strengthen the child’s interests and natural abilities. This builds important foundations for gross and fine motor skills, as well as academic areas such as reading, critical thinking, and problem solving. We provide a warm environment for children where they receive the nurturing and continuous positive reinforcement they need to develop to their fullest potential.
The primary principle among developmental preschools is to promote participation in age-appropriate activities, such as hands-on play, group story-time, and self-expression. Children are encouraged to learn through play. Most developmental schools include academic content. Developmental preschools have philosophies that draw from multiple educational philosophies such as Reggio Emilia, Montessori and Waldorf.
Traditional Montessori programs are entirely child-directed within the learning environment. This method promotes a structured daily routine.

We have a “Flexible Classroom Schedule” on each of our program. This schedule will give you a sense of what makes up a typical day for children in that specific program.

Outdoor play is vital for young children, and we spend a significant amount of time outside at Little Elly.
Many of the developmental tasks that children must achieve—exploring, risk-taking, fine and gross motor development and the absorption of vast amounts of basic knowledge—can be most effectively learned through outdoor play. Children need the opportunity to explore the unknown, the unpredictable, and the adventurous. From venturing off-campus for nature walks and field trips to taking advantage of our playground, opportunities for wonder and discovery are limitless.

Our school employs a professional staff that does a thorough cleaning of the school at the end of each school day.
The teachers themselves are diligent about sanitizing all surfaces when necessary, including after eating. All toys, playground items and materials are regularly cleaned and replaced as needed.

We take the safety of our campus very seriously. Our school implements a comprehensive security system, including multiple security check points:
  • Secured front entry door with a security personnel.
  • Only authorized admittance. Unauthorized persons must wait to be assisted by a staff member.
  • Manual record of all individuals authorized to pick up your child.
  • Security cameras throughout to ensure safety.
  • Traditional sign-in and out in classrooms.
